No to doubt, there's still many people do not understand what are we studying about. When people think about Tourism Management, definitely will link it together with tour guide!!! Like we study so hard and just to become a tour guide!! At the very beginning, I was be very patient to explain what are we doing/studying and it's not everything related with become a tour guide. But now I am so frigging lazy and irritating when comes to explain.
Yes, indeed in tourism management we did learn about tour guiding, but it's just a small part of our course structure. A real tour guide has to have a tour guide license, but we don't have it. If I would like to become a tour guide then I must spend at least 3-6months to attend the course and get the license outside of the school . If I really just wanted to be a tour guide, then I don't need to study for so many years and spent so much of money. All I need to do is just attend a tour guide course, pass the exam and get a license, that's it! Therefore, again I need to clarify some facts, I am not just want to be a tour guide but more than what a tour guide can do. Perhaps, one day I'll just go for the course, get the license and become a professional tour guide but not for now.
Moreover, tourism management is actually quite a flexible course, every tourism student has the choice to work in different market fields. In theory side, we did learn about management, so we can work in management side, no matter what company it is. (of course, it's better to link with Tourism field). In practical, we did learn about tour guiding, events management, some hotel skills and etc.
During my past training, I have been chosen to work in a resort. At first, I worked as a waitress. Second, I became a management trainee in a hotel & resort corporate office. Third, I worked again in a resort at Maldives, as a management trainee as well, but sometimes I would help the resort front desk and also embodiment into a waitress or a resort guide. My friends were wondering why did I choose resort / hotel as my internship placement? The reason are actually very simple.
- I like to play and I would like to try something different.
- My senior always share their training experiences with us. The feedback from them to work in a travel agency was only one word could describe - BORED. So immediately, they cut off my mind to choose travel agent. ( although it might not be very true, but as a normal human being, it'll definitely influence my decision making)
- I wanna proof that, as a tourism student is NOT ONLY can work in travel agent / become a tour guide (those are typical thinking). Thus, I trained in a resort/hotel.
For those who may concern, now I would like to analyse what are the differences between hotel student and tourism student in Taylors College. Basically, we are learning the same management theory, like law, accounting, finance, marketing, HR and etc. The differences are:
- A hotel student have learn F&B, housekeeping, kitchen, food science & etc.
- A tourism student have learn tour guiding, trip organizing, history, geography & etc.
Maybe you will think that, I seems like very impressed with hotel industry and why not I just choose to study hotel management. hahaha... Actually, another reason cause me to choose tourism management is because I will have more chances than others to go travel outside of Malaysia. Taylor's College stipulate or offers a very attractive condition, all student under tourism management will have the chances to organise the trip to different countries. I experienced organise the tour to Pahang rompin & Cambodia during my diploma. After that, I did organise another tour and went to Turkey this year 4/2010. And if I success to pass my this semester, then I will have another chance to go France next year.

Most of my friends are very envy me have the chance to travel so many places, but if my course did not offers those conditions, I don't think I can go anywhere. So I should be thankful & appreciated. Of course, at the same time I need to pay all my efforts to finish my course and it's not easy. Anyway, I know everything will surely have it's difficulty. Last but no least, we are the same body (hotel & tourism), it's just our major is a little bit of different. No matter, what would I be for the future, the only thing I can say is : "tying no harm". I just wanna gain more experiences to stand at the future market field no matter it's in tourism or hotel industry. =)
I am just who I am ^^v
Quotes: tourism & hotel industry is together born with the same mother. Both of them couldn't separated. Without tourism, there's no hotel existed. Without hotel, tourism is completely untenable. - SiewTing
